First tomatoes are coming in, first tender beans have been picked, zucchini has exploded!

In this week's share are:

Lettuce
Spring Onions

Zucchini--this week's main variety is Cocozelle, an Italian heirloom with fantastic taste!  Slice thinly, saute with garlic until starting to brown...delicious!!!  If you like this variety and grown your own, we sell the seeds in spring from the Hudson Valley Seed library.
Combination of broccoli, beans, Senposai (fantastic Asian green), baby beets (a few), cabbage, kohlrabi--there will be a couple of either/or choices...

There are also wonderful peaches at the stand from Woodland Farms, and a few blueberries too.

CSA SUMMER WEEK 6

Fantastic year for potatoes!  They like the rain early on, are flowering beautifully, and the early varieties are setting nice potatoes.  A few more weeks!

In this week's share:

Lettuce
Spring onions
carrots
zucchini
herbs
spinach
cherries
green garlic--wow! what fantastic flavor, gentler than mature garlic.  Slice it and use it raw or cooked!!! This will be it for the green garlic...I'll let the rest mature.

I will check peppers, beets, and kohlrabi later this morning to see if they are ready.

Tomatoes appreciate, finally, the sunshine and warmer weather.  Lots of fruit--now the waiting for the ripening...

Summer CSA Week 5

Crazy rains the last couple of days, and one field was too wet to walk in today, so if we stay dry overnight, we'll have some last minute harvesting tomorrow.

So far we have:

2 heads of lettuce
Spring onions
Red Russian Kale--I've found that blanching chopped kale for a couple of minutes in boiling water reduces bitterness and softens it nicely for further cooking.  Here's a quick, tasty, and nutritious dish with the kale: http://summertomato.com/tag/red-russian-kale/
Cabbage!  Lovely young caraflex or chinese green.  A very easy and tasty dish: http://www.cooks.com/recipe/2g90o8n5/fried-cabbage-with-bacon.html
More cherries
Parsley
Depending on what I can get to, zucchini, carrots, and/or peppers
Might harvest some young garlic if it is sized up.

See you soon!

Summer CSA Week 4

Lots of stuff coming on: should have first zucchini very soon, peppers coming fast, cabbage almost ready...tomatoes need more sun!!!!!

I'm very excited to offer a bag of 3 different heirloom lettuces in the share this week.  Old heirloom varieties are generally the most nutritious of vegetables because they haven't had the nutrients bred out of them!!!!!  The taste on these is fantastic.  Imagine--lettuce with taste!

The 3 varieties are Aswan Balady, which goes back thousands of years to Egypt.  It is the head with the largest leaves in the bag.

Next is Sucrine, an old French variety that is sort of a cross between a butterhead and a romaine.  Wonderful sweet flavor.

Finally, Brown Goldring, whose leaves are brownish gold.  This is a crunchy cos type, with a fantastic flavor.

Use a light dressing on salads you make with these.  This simple dressing is perfect for high quality lettuce!

Also in this week's share:

More spring onions--these will be coming every week for a while--use the whole stalk!!!

Radish microgreens--use these as soon as you can.   If you need them to keep a bit longer, air dry them on a baking sheet when you get home, then store in the fridge in an opened plastic bag.

Peas shoots--this weather is keeping them tender!

Herb bouquet-chives, dill, parsley...basil coming soon!

Cherries!!!!!

I'll be harvesting beets or carrots or kale in the morning to add to the list.  Maybe the first zucchini, but likely not enough for the share.

See you soon!
