CSA WEEK 6!!!

As Phil Rizzuto used to say: HOLY COW!!!  Spring is gone.  That was the whackiest spring weather I've ever encountered--weeks of summer heat in March followed by endless nights of frost, plants went to flower and seed long before they should have, slugs have been legion, I still don't have all my tomatoes in the ground...there's always something to complain about, but each morning offers a new shot at redemption.

For the final week of the spring share:

2.25 lbs of March Farm tomatoes!!!!
1 head of Bibb or Buttercrunch lettuce (these are crisper than leaf lettuce, but not as crisp as Romaine, which should be ready in a week or 2) and 1 head of Black Seeded Simpson.

Choose 3 of the following:

Salad mix with magenta spreen
Gator swiss chard
Mizuna (here are some great Mizuna recipes: http://www.misshomemade.com/mizunarecipe.html
Spinach--not much left of the best spinach crop ever (more on the way)
Arugula--(might be it until fall)
Rhubarb

Substitute as you wish, except for milk and cheese.

We have mixed herb goat cheese and Cayuga blue cheese from the wonderful Lively Farm in upstate NY in the farm stand.  Hopefully we'll have more  Appleridge chickens tomorrow.

Thanks so much for supporting us--we couldn't do this without you!

CSA week 5

Oops again.  We had Pedersen's asparagus, spinach, salad mix, arugula, bok choi, tokyo bekana, radishes, and Black Seeded Simpson lettuce.  Hope you enjoyed!!!

CSA Week 4

Take a walk through the garden this week if you have time--there's much in bloom right now!!!!

In this week's share: please take the very tasty Asparagus from Pedersen farms in upsate NY and our delicious spinach.

Then, please choose 4 of the following: mixed asian greens, arugula, salad mix with magenta spreen and  claytonia, black seeded simpson lettuce, or radishes.

We have fiddleheads this week, more cheese from Arethusa, a couple of flavored yogurts from Arethusa, and again, hydroponic tomatoes, which are very good, but I'm happy to announce that we'll soon be bringing in the greenhouse tomatoes from March Farm in Behtlehem, CT.

Enjoy!

Spring 2012 CSA Week 3!!!

In our lettuce mix this week, there is a bit of Magenta Spreen, pictured above. It tastes like a nutty spinach, and is full of good stuff for you: vitamins K, A, C, potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and saponins: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1200/is_n24_v148/ai_17909340/
More on Magenta Spreen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chenopodium_giganteum (I'm having trouble making these links live on the new and improved(!) blogger site--cut and paste in your browser if they don't work. This week's share: radishes, salad mix with magenta spreen, spinach, arugula, baby red bok choi, and a choice of beets, red sorrel, or micro-greens mix. I've been told very good things about the hydroponic tomato operation Intergrow Farms in upstate New York and have brought some of their tomatoes in. They're priced nicely, but please don't swap out for these!!! If enough people like them, I'll make them part of next week's share. I'll have a pot of radish top soup available for sampling in the barn kitchen. Come up for a bowl!!!

2012 Spring CSA Week 2

Oops. Forgot to post this last week...let's see...we had spinach, arugula, beets, radishes, and turnips and potatoes from upstate NY. Hope you liked it!
